By redesigning the Palace Square, the city of Detmold is pursuing an upgrade, the elimination of monument preservation and functional deficits, further a more intensive integration of the central square into the city structure. Concept: The redesign follows the premise of treating the historical heritage with respect. The overriding requirement is a restrained, functional and appropriate architectural language. The key themes are the "release of the historic facades" and the staging of the valuables (palace facade, fountain, etc.). The existing fountains and monuments are exposed and related. The shell fountain features enclosing seating and the fragmented layout of the square is rearranged: three generous lawns as places of contemplation will form the core of the complex, and four square-like extensions will serve as the opening areas of the open space, which strengthen important connections with the surroundings. Together, a green open space is created in midst the city center.
